This
is the old John
Robert Berry Store. It is still standing though it is getting very old.
It was probably built around 1870. Johns father in law William Bowling
was a very prosperous merchant in Person County. The location of this
store is about 1/2 mile from The Person County line. and while I have
never been told, It is my belief that William Bowling got John started
as a merchant also. This store was also used as a U.S.post office site with the address Meredith |

survey map below was surveyed for
Robert Berry Junr. in 1753. The survey was done by William Churton who
surveyed and designed Hillsborough N.C. in 1752. Robert Berry was granted a Granville Land Grant for this property in 1757*. All of the pictures on the preceding page and this one joins or is part of the original grant. I do not know why the grant was to Robert Berry and the survey was for Robert Berry Junr. Robert Berry never used the Junr. after he was granted the land in 1757. He did have a son that was a junior but he was not born at the time of the survey Some of the original land grant is still owned by descendants of Robert Berry. * NOTE: Notice that Thomas Cate was a chain carrier on this document below Robert married Elizabeth Cate(s). |
