HENRY BERRY PAGE
Henry Berry became very important
when his father Robert Berry died. In Robert's 1812 will he left the
plantation to Henry with some conditions.
First Henry was to take care of his mother for the rest of her life.
Secondly he was to take
care of his brother Isaac until he became capable of handling his own
affairs.
The statement in the will reads:"This my
son Isaack Berrys legecy to be left in care of my son Henry Berry so as
for the aforesaid Isaac to have the beninifit of it but not so that he
can sell or dispose of it without Henry approbation also this my son
Issack Berry legesey at his death to be divided amoung my heirs equally
provided he has no heirs born after this willis wrote also this my son
Isaack Berry legesy to be given to him for to be at his own disposal if
he comes to his proper reason. if he does not come to his right reason
to be kept as above mentioned. I transcribed
spelling as near to the way it was written as I could determine.
In my opinion the fact
that Henry inherited Robert's plantation caused David to convince his
entire family to remove to Georgia. around 1822. It may have caused
Robert Berry Junior to do the same thing.I say this because I
have never been able to find any known descendants of Robert Berry
Junior in Orange County North Carolina after 1830. There was a Robert
in the 1830 census but he was a much younger man with small children
and he did not show up in the 1840 census. In the 1850 census all of
the remaining Berry's in Orange county were Henry or descendants of
Joshua or William Berry. In the 1850 census Henry
listed as head of household # 1756 and listed his age as 74 (born
1776). He listed Anna (Hannah) Berry as 80 years old (born 1770) . There was a Tom Cates
age 12, Jasper Hopkins age 8, Polly Hopkins age 30, Ned Hopkins age 28,
Silas Hopkins age 25, and a Rowan Hopkins age 21.
Henry apparently died around Dec.1855or in 1856. He left this will:
