SON OF ROBERT AND ELIZABETH CATE BERRY

OCTOBER 6, 2007

DAVID J. BERRY was born about 1774 in Orange County North Carolina. On February 21st 1797 he married Mary Blalock. Mary already had a little girl when they were married. There was a bastardy bond issued against John Leathers in Orange County North Carolina on the 23rd of August 1791. VIEW TRANSCRIPTION OF BOND.
David and Mary's first child must have been Sarah "Sally" Berry because she married William A.Cates in Orange County on February 26th 1817. Sally was probably born April 4th 1796.
David and his family lived in Orange County NC until after 1824. Shortly after that the entire family removed to Georgia. David had inherited a slave but none of the land that his father had owned. The plantation was willed to his younger brother, Henry Berry in 1814. David oldest sister's children were living in Jackson County Georgia. Robert Berry Jr., his oldest brother was in Fayette County Alabama in the 1830 Census. Robert Berry Jr.s daughter, Catherine and her husband Jacob Pickle and their family were in the 1830 Fayette County Alabama Census also. William Berry another brother was in Blount County Alabama in 1830. I guess it is possible that these brothers and their families all migrated at the same time to the West. It is also just as likely that each Berry family traveled with other groups of settlers.
Sarah Berry, Thomas Berry's widow married John Pigg on December 11th 1815 and removed to Cypress Inn Tennessee taking David and Eleanor Berry. I think they may have removed to Tennessee earlier than David J. Berry and his family. Cypress Inn Tennessee is just about 10 miles north of the Alabama/Tennessee line. So David J. Berry had more relatives in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee then he did in Orange County North Carolina. None of them more than a few days ride on horseback from each other. There was a lot more travel in those days than I ever imagined and I think it is likely they kept in touch by mail and may have actually visited each other.
